Autumn on the Homestead

Autumn has finally arrived at casa Martinez and the  leaves have fallen from some of the trees.  I've raked some up around the blackberry vines to mulch over for the winter.  I'm hoping for a first berry harvest come spring.  There's not much left of the garden and the drough killed most of the grass and ground cover so there's a lot of  bare dirt on the property right now.

Here's the ever elsusive surprise I keep working on and it remains bare for now since the seeds for it need to stratify over the winter to soften the shell so they can spring up in summer.  I can't wait to show all the pictures I have for this and  the ones I'll take when the flowers come up in this..  I may also rock around the whole thing for birds and other small creatures to sit among in the thickness of the flowers later.

The only thing still being productive is the hot pepper plants that are huge.  They are still blooming and putting on peppers.  I have roasted several of the big green hatch peppers to use in salsa later and several small hard red ones that can be ground into powder for enchilada sauce.  I post pics of my food on Facebook.

It is time to get the chimnea ready for bonfires and roasting.  Duke dug all the sand out of it this summer and put a lot of toys and sticks in it.  I can't wait to cut my wood into smaller pieces and light this up for a chilly fall evening with some hot cocoa and treats.

Now it's time to take a look at the fur babies in the autumn weather

Duke is intent on watching the yard and making sure no stray cats or other critters wonder in.  He's an expert ball catcher and can catch with his mouth when the ball is tossed his direction.  In this picture he's alerting me that one of our cats is sneaking back in the fence for breakfast time.

Daphne came out and  investigated the yard before deciding she'd rather be put on leash and go for a nice long walk.  Her favorite backyard activity is to torment Duke and chase the cats around.  She also loves spotting squirrels and chasing them.
Speaking of Jelly Bean here she is  nestled in some fallen leaves and relaxing.  Her fur is getting thicker in preperation for winter.  I'm hoping when it's colder and the leaves won't keep her warm enough that she'll go in the garage and take advantage of a roof and a nice bale.

Last but not least, is our spook cat Ebony.  At ngiht all you can see of her is those eyes and she perches up high wherever she can.  This morning she was atop this window A/C unit  where people could see her and hear her meow.  However, she can be hiding in the rafters in teh garage or the  roof of the garage looking down below so watch out for her.
